Rome Tour In Depth Description
This itinerary traverses the entire historical center of the ancient and modern city exploring the most celebrated artworks, monuments and sites of imperial and papal Rome while discussing their extraordinary history. Here we are introduced to those spaces and artistic masterpieces that every visitor knows of and yearns to see upon the first visit to Rome.
Beginning at the Colosseum, we set out to explore the historic record of Roman structures and urban spaces from the Republican to the Imperial era, admiring the triumphal arches and monumental ruins of the city as we head along the famous Via Sacra into the heart of ancient Rome. Taking in the vistas that show the palimpsest nature of the city, deciphering its accumulated archeological iterations and admiring the classical architecture and construction technologies, we pause in the Roman Forum to discuss the ancient city’s political and social organization and admire such sites as the Curia (Senate House) and temples.
Upon exiting the Roman Forum at the Mamertine Prison, we begin to discover the other side of Rome, an historic “modern” city, as we head towards the theatrical Trevi Fountain passing along the way Trajan’s Markets, one of the wonders of the Classical world. From hereon we will experience the urban personality that Rome acquired through the patronage of the 17th and 18th century counter-reformation papacy and the influences of its wealthy aristocratic families. Walking through the center of modern Rome, with its Renaissance and Baroque distinctiveness, will discover how the city underwent a dramatic explosion in the creation of artworks, especially public spaces and monuments giving rise to the city’s last great identity, the Baroque, and affording Rome its magical quality.
We continue on to the Pantheon, undisputedly the city’s best preserved imperial building where we pause to discuss the origins and importance of Roman engineering before continuing on to the dramatic Piazza Navona, undoubtedly one of the Roman visitor’s most favorite spaces. From here we will examine and enjoy the works of rival architects Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini and their disciples as we stroll beyond the piazza, past the exquisite façade of the Church of Santa Maria della Pace and on to our final destination.
Upon approaching Bernini’s charming Ponte Sant’Angelo we cross the River Tiber to encounter the numinous mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian, known today as the Castle of the Holy Angel. At this juncture our extensive and exhilarating itinerary, a wonderfully educational and enjoyable experience, comes to an end. We can now reflect and realize how, in fact, we have traversed the entire Eternal City and partaken of the greatest epochs of its civilization.
