Highlights of the Eternal City by Car

Rome is a big city, what better way to see all of the places you want to visit than by car!

Highlights:

Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo, St. Peter's Basilica

Touring Rome by car is a great way to visit all of the important sights in a limited amount of time.  Our trip begins by motoring up Via Veneto, shown in Federico Fellini’s groundbreaking and (at the time) scandalous film La Dolce Vita. Your guide will bring Rome alive for you as you visit the Pantheon, Bernini’s breathtaking masterpiece,  the Fountain of the Four Rivers,  Castel Sant’ Angelo and St. Peter’s Square.  We use the vehicle  to help us cover the longest distances between sights, but the tour also includes a walking portion so you’ll see the city center and St. Peter’s from ground level!

Tour Length: Three Hours

Please note that in observance of St. Peter’s dress code, women must have shoulders and knees covered and men must wear long pants.

The Forum and the Colosseum are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to ancient Rome! Traveling by car allows you to cover more ground and see a whole host of other fascinating places, like the Capitoline Hill, religious and political center of Imperial Rome, or the ruins of the Theater Marcellus.   We’ll also visit the stunning St. Paul’s Outside-the-Walls where it is said that the Apostle Paul is buried.

Tour Length: Three Hours

Tapestry Gallery, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, Sistine Chapel

Your guide will take you on a tour of the highlights of one of the world’s most fascinating museums where you’ll see treasures like The Raphael Rooms, frescoed by this legendary painter, and a beautiful collection of antique maps depicting the world as it was a thousand years ago.  Of course, the highlight of the tour will be a look at Michelangelo’s stunning frescoes adorning the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, in which Popes were once elected.

Length of Tour: Three Hours

Please note that in observance of the strict dress code, women must have shoulders and knees covered and men must wear long pants.

Sacred Rome – Churches and the Catacombs

Visit the beautiful and lesser known churches of Rome, along with the underground tunnels in which the faithful were buried!

Highlights:

St. Mary Major, St. John in Lateran, Scala Sancta (the Holy Stairs), Appian Way, Catacombs

As the official home of the Catholic Church for over 2,000 years, it’s no wonder Rome boasts some of the most beautiful churches in the world.  St. Mary Major, dedicated to the Holy Mother, will astonish you with its mosaics as will the first Papal Residence, St. John’s, which boasts an art collection that spans the ages from the Renaissance to the Baroque. We’ll then head down the Appian Way by bus to visit the catacombs, underground burial places of the ancient Christians and Jews.  The tour ends with a very special panoramic view of the Baths of Caracalla.

Tour Length: Three Hours

Please note that women must have knees and shoulders covered and men must wear long pants when entering the churches.

The Real Rome

Escape the crowds and traffic of the tourist zone and see the Rome that other visitors don’t know about!

R- WT – 05 - PR

Highlights:

The Trastevere neighborhood, Jewish Ghetto, Campo de’ Fiori, Senate House, Largo Argentina

Beyond the crowds surrounding Rome’s most popular attractions, there is a fascinating neighborhood called Trastevere where you’ll enjoy a relaxing walk through the winding cobble stone streets.  Crossing the Tiber River, you’ll see the Senate House in which Julius Caesar was murdered thousands of years ago and learn how Pope Paul IV condemned the city’s Jewish population to the confines of the walled Jewish Ghetto in the middle of the 16th Century.   A visit to Campo de’ Fiori,  now one of Rome’s liveliest squares, offers an insider’s view of modern Roman life as well as a chilling glimpse into the past, when the square was the site of executions during the Inquisition 500 years ago.

Those interested in 18th Century Baroque can opt to visit the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps

17th Century Rome, in a distant reflection of the days of the Roman Empire thousands of years ago, was given to decadence.  The art and architecture of the period, known as Baroque, is ornate and fanciful, rich in detail with florid touches that distinguish it from anything that came before.  The most important artist of the time was Bernini who, with the help of the powerful Cardinal who sponsored him, left an unforgettable stamp on Rome with works all over the city from St. Peter’s Basilica to the exclusive 17th Century drawing rooms of Rome’s rich and powerful.  We’ll also see works by Borromini, another of the great Baroque artists, and learn how his attempt to match Bernini’s fame and recognition led to tragedy.

Tour Length: Three Hours

The Villas of Tivoli

Visit the centuries old country residences of Roman Emperors and Nobility!
