History of the Arena di Verona

The Arena of Verona was built over 2000 years ago as a Roman amphitheatre and remains to this day one of the biggest and most well conserved examples of Roman architecture. The monument retains its name Arena, a derivative of the Latin word rena meaning sand, as a testimony to its gaming past in which the area was filled with sand.

The Arena has always been home to games, tournaments, circuses, only turning into a venue for theatrical performances in the 18th century. The first lyrical performance at the Arena dates back to August 1913. Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida was performed for the 100th anniversary celebration of the author’s birth thus launching the beginning of the world’s largest and most famous open air lyrical festival.
