Conte Matto

The Conte Matto is in the lovely medieval village of Trequanda.  Not far from Montalcino, this restaurant has wonderfully prepared local food and a nice rustic atmosphere with a refined touch.  Some of the recipes are truly ancient - like the rabbit "dolceforte" prepared with - of all things - chocolate!  There are some other unusual and delicious combinations and lovely homemade desserts.

Cuisine
The cuisine is mostly Tuscan - delicious steak included.

Ambience
The Conte Matto has a nice country ambience.  It is a rather small restaurant so it can get a bit noisy.  If you reserve a table near the window, you will be treated to some lovely views of the countryside.

Wines
Magnificent wine list!  The Brunello is very expensive and very good.  The also have a good selection of Vin Nobile from Montepulciano, and other Chianti reds.

Tips
Be sure you view the wine list before ordering the wine or you may be surprised at the prices when you receive your bill.   It is also highly recommended having a reservation as the restaurant is small and is used by many local people too.

Prices
A little on the high side, but worth it.

Suggested menu
For starters, the mixed antipasto is wonderful - toasted bread with various patès, grilled vegetables, salamis and prosciutto.  Next, try the "pici" which is a hand-rolled spaghetti made in this area of Tuscany.  The pici is excellent with a meat sauce or with the tradition "briciole", which is basically crumbs of tuscan bread toasted in garlic and oil.  Delicious!  Follow up with a thick Florentine steak and a mixed salad and if you still have room - one of their homemade desserts.
