Tips for eating out in Tuscany
There are many, many restaurants scattered all over the Tuscany countryside. Every little hamlet has at least one eating place. In the smaller villages this is often just the back room of a caffè or grocery store. Some wonderful and memorable meals can be had in these places if one doesn't expect to find a large selection in the menu. Always try the local wines or house wines here.
There are different kinds of eating establishments in Tuscany.
- Trattorias - These are more casual than restaurants and often have bare table tops and plain drinking glasses. They are often cheaper than restaurants.
Restaurants - Often slightly more expensive than trattorias but have a larger menu. Sometimes they will not serve house wine.
Osterias - These are another form of a trattoria.
Avoid any fast food places with ready made pastas - they are tourist traps and are often just as expensive as eating in a real trattoria.
