Tips for dining in Florence and Tuscany
There are different kinds of eating establishments in Florence and Italy.
- Trattorias - These are more casual than restaurants and often have bare table tops and plain drinking glasses. They are often cheaper than restaurants.
Restaurants - Often slightly more expensive than trattorias but have a larger menu. Sometimes they will not serve house wine.
Osterias - These are another form of a trattoria.
Avoid any fast food places with ready made pastas - they are tourist traps and are often just as expensive as eating in a real trattoria.

Vivoli - Listed in all the most famous guidebooks. This is a great place to have an ice cream when visiting the Santa Croce area of Florence.
Perchè No? - Fantastic ice cream with a homemade taste. They have a good central location. We highly recommend tasting their "semi-freddo" ice creams that come in various flavours.

Rivoire - In Piazza Signoria, this is one of Florence's oldest cafès. Try their delicious thick hot chocolate with whipped cream and their fresh pastries. Be careful if you decide to sit at a table here - service at the tables, indoors and outdoors, can be surprisingly expensive!
