Rick Everingham
A Brief History
Born in Sydney in 1945, but living in Brisbane since 1968, Rick Everingham has progressively established himself as one of Queensland’s most successful and respected artist.
Since his first one-man exhibition in 1970, Rick has worked continuously as a painter, holding numerous exhibitions in Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, and other regional areas of Australia, gaining an ever-increasing following along the way. His work has been included in many important collections, both private and corporate.

International exhibitions have also been held in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and in Italy, in San Gimignano and Soiana.
His paintings are generally oil and acrylic on board or canvas. His work is imbued with a sense of subtle light and a feeling for the peaceful ambience of particular places. His love of surfaces has always been a major influence in his work, whether it be reflections, or patinas on walls, or interesting windows and doors, and has provided subject material from the beginning of his career. His earlier work also included beaches, hillsides, still life, portraits and a large series of paintings of children.
A painting trip to Italy in 1991 brought about a major shift in focus and change in subject matter. Annual trips to Italy, and also visits to Greece and France, fuelled his passion for finding different subjects, and produced a body of works that capture the very essence of these unique places.

In 1999 Rick and his wife sold their home and private gallery space in Brisbane, and moved to a small town in Tuscany, to establish a studio in Italy.
Rick has had a long-standing interest in sculpture, making his first piece in stone some 12 years ago. The dream of working more continually in stone and bronze is finally being realized in Italy, with separate painting and sculpture studios, with several new series of bronzes presently at the foundry in the process of casting.
A Personal Philosophy
After many years of observation, and a certain amount of trial and error, I have come to the conclusion that our lives are governed by a very simple set of principles. My aim is to live and work in harmony with these principles.
I believe we get back exactly what we give out, but somehow multiplied. Our present society seems intent on expressing an ever-increasing number of disturbing and aggressive images. It is not my intention to add to these, nor to allow them too much space in my experiences. I try to make anything I produce as positive and life-affirming as possible.
I am convinced that the images we hold in our minds come true in our reality. Unfortunately we are encouraged to focus only on the images presented to us by the various media, and we tend to believe that these pictures are how the world really is. We forget there are many more expressions of life that are just outside our daily view.
I believe that our experience of life is the sum total of the choices we make. We are also completely responsible for those choices. My paintings are a reminder to me, and hopefully others, that there is an abundance of simple beauty still in the world, waiting wherever we choose to find it.
It is possible to view life very simply, in a way that makes it full of joy and a delightful experience. I see the world as a truly magical place, where all things seem to be connected in some mysterious way.
Life is a journey, and Desley and I have decided to live part of our journey in Italy. This is a country with an over-all patina that I find irresistible. Italians have a wonderful zest for life and a healthy dislike for authority. Couple this with its immense cultural heritage, and what appears to be chaotic organization, and you have a situation that is very seductive.
My painting process is also very simple. Wherever I go I am presented with certain images, situations, ideas, or even subtleties of colour and patinas, that strongly appeal to me. A particular subject will resonate with some internal harmonic, and this produces a specific sensation within me, which somehow works its way into a painting.
The aim of my work is simply to communicate these feelings to others.

The 3 bronze sculptures seen here were inspired by an article on Baci chocolates, in the Herald Tribune several years ago. (Article attached). I was very intrigued with the quote from Luciano De Crescenzo:
“We’re one-winged angels, and can only fly embracing.”
The pieces were cast by Fonderia d’arte Massimo Del Chiaro in Pietrasanta, to the highest standards. Each is an edition of 6 castings, with 2 additional artists proofs.
These are the first casting of each edition and are the copies I had decided to keep for my own collection. They are each signed and numbered 1/6.
