Festival of Saint John - Florence
June 24, 2006 (Every year) additional festivity dates to be announced
Florence celebrates its patron saint, San Giovanni (Saint John), in true renaissance fashion! Renaissance parades, concerts, boat races on the Arno and dances fill the city with bustle and festivities, but the true start of the show is Calcio Storico. This historic game is the predecessor to modern-day football (i.e. soccer) and combines a ball, brute force, speed and strength. The four teams that constitute Calcio Storico represent the four different quartieri in Florence: Santa Croce, San Giovanni, Santo Spirito and Santa Maria Novella. Don’t miss this great opportunity to see a unforgettable Florentine football match with players in renaissance costume!
Vogalonga –Venice
May 2006 (Every year) dates to be announced
One of Venice’s biggest and newer events is the Vogalonga, a boat race started only in 1975. Begun by a group of rowing enthusiasts, this race has created a large following and as a result, many different traditional types of sailing vessels are now being used to participate in this annual event.
The race takes place each year in May around the time of the Ascension. In Venice, this holy day is historically linked to the ceremony of the Doge’s symbolic union to the sea. The 30km (18mile) race begins in the Lagoon and goes to the outlying island of Burano coming back through the Cannaregio, and finishing on the Grand Canal. A unique experience on the Venetian canals.
